The following news item was featured on the back page of Sin (NUIG college paper, 19/04/10).
A sun-bathed Dóilín Coral Beach in Carraroe saw the arrival of the NUIG/GMIT SubAqua Club on Sunday 11th April. After a year of Wednesday night pool training, lectures and introductory dives in Donegal a few weeks earlier, most of the club novices completed their first five dives and achieved their "Trainee" certification.
Conditions under the water were a bit cloudier but improved significantly with depth. Obseved on the dives were large spider crabs, dogfish, wrasse, blennies, gobies, hermit crabs and colourful anemones among the diverse marine life we've come to associate with Carraroe.
The afternoon's diving was followed by a BBQ in the sun!
Those trained up to "Trainee" level in the club this year so far are Tommy Torrades, Shane Murphy, Sarah Lawless, Ceara Bergin, Pauline Conroy, Martin Timoney, Mark Gilligan, Declan O'Brien, Anna Gubbins, Emer Dempsey and Migle Makelyte.
Congratulations to James Keating and Imelda Finn who became the clubs newest "Rescue Divers" after passing their test in Galway Bay earlier that day!

"Longest Scuba Dive" World Record Attempt
In memory of a son and nephew, two Irish brothers (or 'lunatics' as some would prefer) are to make a daring scuba dive in an attempt to raise funds for sick children and enter the Guinness Book of World Records.
‘The World’s Longest Scuba Dive’ will begin at Scubadive West Dive Centre off the West coast of Galway on Saturday, 10th October 2009. The world record attempt aims to raise funds for St. Raphael’s Children’s Ward at Beaumont Hospital and the charity CD’s Helping Hands.
Green Dragon arrived in Galway last week and is now en route to her new home at the Galway Atlantaquaria in Salthill. From 22 July until the end of August visitors to Galway will have a unique opportunity of visiting Green Dragon on 'dry land' and viewing the sparse conditions that the crew endured over 9 months.
Green Dragon sailed 37000nm around the world in the Volvo Ocean Race and was one of only 4 boats to complete all legs of the race. In addition she achieved 3 podium places and won the hearts and minds of supporters around the world where the popular refrain 'Go the Dragon' could be heard in many languages. In addition she achieved extensive global media coverage for all its sponsors but most importantly for www.discoverireland.com and Galway.
Given the acknowledged success of the venture and the manner in which Galway and indeed the entire country has “bought in” to the concept, the organisers have launched the second phase of the project.
Green Dragon will form part of the Galway Atlantaquaria visitor experience and is presented by Let's Do it Galway in conjunction with the Galway Atlantaquaria, Fáilte Ireland and Galway City Council .
This was always part of the plan to harness the local, national and international interest in the Green Dragon and, its short- term summer home in a maritime setting at the aquarium with its established business model makes huge sense.
